This presentation will focus on privacy engineering issues created by two factors: the advent of autonomous systems enabled by artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and expert systems technology; and the advent of ecosystems enabled by increasing connectivity (IoT), processing (cloud), and collaboration (smart contract) technology. 

The following issues will be presented 

  • taking a system of systems approach matching the complex deployed ecosystems;

  • controlling the scaling effect of ecosystems and the use of malicious AI to increase likelihood and severity of attacks in an ecosystem;

  • integrating capabilities for transparency, explainability, monitoring and control, at both a system level and at a system of systems level (e.g. swarm of drones)

  • integrating organisational capabilities for collaboration in underlying ecosystems throughout the lifecycle of systems of systems, including governance capabilities; and

  • provision of assurance for privacy compliance in complex ecosystems

Two use cases will be considered: connected vehicle solutions in the C-ITS (Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems) domain, and an data exchange market place on energy data in a smart city domain. The presentation will be based on an ISO study underway on the impact of AI on privacy. Recommendations will be presented covering policies, organisational aspect of an ecosystem, standardisation and research.
